Memorial Stone on Tumbledown
A Wonderful thing has happened! Our Crazy,
Mountain Man cousin - Scott Croteau - along with his lady, Jess, have
spoken, and spoken a bit more with the Park Rangers of the Tumbledown
Mountain area. We have an approval (as though we would not have done it
anyway!) that we may place a Memorial stone on top of Tumbledown Mountain in honor
of Chris' life, dreams and love of the Blue Mountains in Maine.
I am encouraged by some strange force to capture Scott
& Jess telling their tale on tape. That may be here soon. Until then we will
be searching for the perfect stone that may be engraved and will be
organizing a fundraiser to help cover the cost.
The Walk 2008
Final Steps
On August 24th, 2008, the Douglass Family and SmallWorldTreks will be
participating in a walk that will span from Dixfield, Maine to Tumbledown
Mountain in Weld, Maine.
As most of you know, On June 1st, 2008, Chris Douglass was to start an
incredible journey that would take him from Bellvue, Colorado to Weld,
Maine. A distance of over 2,100 miles!
He planned to walk the entire span, before the terrible accident that took
his life.
In honor of his amazing life, we are going to take the final steps of what
would have been one of his greatest achievements, and we'd like you to be
there! Join us for this tribute to Chris. Contact Glen Giasson (

The Plan
Here's how it's going to work. You tell us how many miles you would like to
walk and we'll coordinate the route so that each of the 22 miles are
covered. We will set a specific time that we all start walking while chase
cars, starting at the farthest point, will drive along the route picking up
people as they complete their section of the walk. Once all miles are
completed, those who would like, can join us for the final climb up
Tumbledown.
The total mileage from Dixfield to Tumbledown is about 22 miles, with
another 1.8 miles up the Brook Trail to Tumbledown Pond. Due to the distance
covered and the amount of people involved, we will start relatively early so
that we can still get up Tumbledown before the Mid-day August heat.
If you would like to participate in the walk, we will need walkers & chasers
(shuttle drivers). Or, if you would like to help with the coordination or
support, please send an email our way.

Memorial Stone
On Tumbledown Mountain
"The World Is Smaller Than You Think!"
These words were spoken to me by Chris amidst laughs as we discussed ideas
for this website, SmallWorldTreks.
Trying to think of a catchy phrase while encompassing what we wanted to show
people, Chris muttered the words above, almost jokingly. As they began to
sink in, we realized that he had just summed up what we had been discussing
for weeks.
That the world is there for the taking, for those willing to reach out. And
that it is not as difficult as most would believe.
Like so many times before, Chris had found the perfect words for the moment.
And now, more than ever, they mean so much.
So we find it fitting that on his memorial stone, to be forever affixed upon
Tumbledown Mountain, these words boldly stand.
We are working on the details of what will be the Chris Douglass Memorial
Stone, placed on Tumbledown Mountain, in honor of his amazing life! The
details are still in the works.
